Message from Fort Alice

"Thank you for taking part in our #WearItProud Campaign, we hope you enjoyed the celebrations however you celebrated it! I would like to say a huge thank you for your donation which has raised a total of £1,981.00 on the day, the funds raised make such a difference for our families. We are so grateful for the support we have received from the Bolton community. Financial donations are extremely welcome especially in these times of funding cuts and increase in cost of living, without people such as yourselves we would struggle to continue to give our families the invaluable service we provide.

As you are aware, at Fortalice, we provide frontline services for adult victims, young people and children affected by domestic abuse. This includes 22 self-contained flats in the Refuge, accommodating 22 women with a capacity for up to 70 children. Additional services at the Outreach Support Centre include 19 projects, which supported approximately 2,200 individuals across Bolton last year. Your generosity will help us to carry on providing for the families here, who are at a difficult time in their lives.

Recently, a resident said as she was leaving the Refuge “when I arrived at Fortalice, I didn’t know what to expect. I was at rock bottom - I didn’t even know who I was anymore. With a lot of time and patience from staff at Fortalice, I have learnt my self-worth, that I do matter and that I do have a voice. I’ve made goals for my future that I never dreamed of thinking I could achieve. Fortalice has changed my whole outlook on life. I am now ready to move on to the next chapter of my life with my family. I honestly couldn’t have achieved any of this without the ongoing support and patience from all staff at Fortalice.”

Please accept our best wishes from all at Fortalice and thank you for your continued support."

Fort Alice #wearitproud

Our team wore purple or blue on 14th September to raise awareness and money for Fort Alice, the Bolton based charity which supports women, men, families, young people and children from the area who have been effected by domestic abuse or violence.

They provide frontline services, training programmes, community client work, work closely with schools and local GPs, and also facilitate a 22 bed refuge which can hold up to 22 women and 70 children.

Last year they supported over 300 children in the community alone, the demand for the service unfortunately continues to grow. This year they have a significant shortfall in funds, due to a number of our services that are unfunded combined with the increase in cost of living. Therefore they need support more than ever to continue to keep victims safe and continue this vital service.

Anti-abuse campaign for GP practices launches 20.05.2021

Majority of GP receptionists face unprecedented levels of abuse at work, new research shows

The campaign has been launched as a new survey launched today shows 75% of GP receptionists reporting experiencing daily abuse from patients. With the majority (78%) facing threatening behaviour, racist or sexist abuse from patients, and 83% reporting having called the police for help, today the Institute of General Practice Management (IGPM) launch their campaign to end all abuse towards general practice staff.

The aim of our campaign is to highlight the good work practices are doing, and make a plea to the public to be patient with our staff, instead of attacking them. GP staff have worked throughout the pandemic and have done their absolute best to support patients. We’re calling for the abuse to end now.

  • Robyn Clark, a practice manager in South Gloucestershire and one of the founders of the IGPM commented: “As demand for GP services has increased dramatically over the last year, sadly so has the amount of abuse practice staff have faced."
  • Nicola Davies, a practice manager in Cornwall and founding member of the IGPM said: “We hope that by raising the personal effect of abuse on staff, we can encourage patients to be tolerant and understanding. Our staff are doing their job. It is never a personal vendetta to stop a patient from accessing healthcare.”
  • Kay Keane, a practice manager in Stockport and Director of the IGPM said: “A man attended our practice with six knives because he didn’t get the treatment he wanted. He smashed up the waiting room and threatened staff members. It was a scene we never want repeated in GP practice. It was terrifying and unnecessary. But we also know this is extreme. Bad language and threats are an everyday occurrence, and it is unacceptable.”
  • Jo Wadey, a practice manager in Worthing and founding member of the IGPM commented: "Receptionists are leaving their roles because of the abuse they receive, which means we are continually trying to recruit and train, which puts a huge strain on practices."
